Privacy Concerns

Ethical Reasoning 1: Headliner

Problem Definition

ACM 1.3

Be Honest and Trustworthy

Data being sent is not known to the public which could raise concerns as they could be lied to about the data being collected and its intentions.

ACM 1.6

Respect Privacy

Having a camera, the water quality sensor can be hacked to spy, track, and gather information about someone illegally and without their consent.

Ethical Reasoning 1: List

Gathering Information

Stakeholders

System Designer

  • Should understand any malicious intent for the sensor will damage the image of the sensor.

Government/Organisation

  • Responsible for how the data is being used to improve the AI algorithms, quality of life of the public

  • The main source of implementing the water quality sensors in larger areas such as cities

  • Data could be sold to third parties to have location based targeted ads

Users

  • Should be aware that data about them/their area is being collected

  • Should know how the water quality sensor work

Ethical Reasoning 1: List

Applying Guideline Principles

Client 5

Utilitarianism

Data being collected should be used to improve the water conditions of areas and nothing else, which will show the water quality sensor is actually being used.

Client 6

Virtue Ethics

  • AI algorithms should try to be as useful and informative as possible.

  • Be honest about data being collected to the public as it will show honesty.

Ethical Reasoning 1: Clients

Generating, evaluating and taking action

The approach that will best ensure the privacy of the users will be the virtue ethics.

Intentions and data should be disclosed by anyone sending or receiving data

Should not be used in private areas (e.g. bathrooms)

Privacy should be assured and data promised to remain confidential to the public

Only necessary data will be collected and will only be used to improve the quality of life of the public

Ethical Reasoning 1: List

Reflect

  • As a product that primarily tracks and analyses objects (harmful bacteria in water), there will be people that will use this product for malicious intent.

  • All stakeholders should be aware of this and should try their best to prevent any malicious intent for a product that promises to improve health.

  • Ethical employees that will use the data responsibly and for the greater good will result in the best use case of this product.
